Guest Post The Luddite’s Guide To Technology

I’m hosting a guest post on my blog today by author CJS Hayward, a creative non-fiction author who wrote, among other works, “The Luddite’s Guide to Technology”. Enjoy the guest post!

One of the questions I’ve been asked about a book like The Luddite’s Guide to Technology is how I go about researching such a thing. And the answer, in this case, is that I let the questions become a part of me over a number of years, and become a dimension that I am sensitive to.

In some sense my education has positioned me well for things like this: first master’s in math with a technology edge, and second master’s in theology covering the humanities edge. Both have informed an interest in the human aspects of using technology, an interest I’ve had before either of the two above programs.

The Psychology of Computer Programming was a groundbreaking title in the history of software engineering, precisely because of its realization that computer programming wasn’t just an activity that involved computers; it was also an activity that involved humans, and approaching the activity of computer programming well means appreciating both humans and computers. Other classics have followed in its steps by re-creating the basic approach: I think of Steve McConnell’s Code Complete. Human use of technology is an activity that involves humans, and relates to what is good for humans, as well as an activity that involves technology.

And that isn’t just a concern about software engineering. There is an implicit dialogue between man and machine when mankind uses technology. The present transformation of societies worldwide is not just about technology, but the dialogue between man and machine is uprooting about as much as anything in history – or prehistory. Paleo books may talk about the agricultural revolution being the greatest change in the existence of the human race–which it may be, but it is not the most rapid uprooting.

In this turbulence, The Luddite’s Guide to Technology may provide some very helpful bearings!

Mammon, as it is challenged in the Sermon on the Mount, represents such wealth and possessions as one could have two thousand years ago. But that is merely beer as contrasted to the eighty proof whisky our day has concocted. The Sermon on the Mount aims to put us in the driver’s seat and not what you could possess in ancient times, and if the Sermon on the Mount says something about metaphorical beer, perhaps there are implications for an age where something more like eighty proof whisky is all around us.

Book Review A Bridge Through Time

A Bridge Through Time BTitle: A Bridge Through Time

Author: Jennae Vale

Genre: Time Travel Romance

Ashley Moore’s life in San Francisco has hit a few snags, not the least of which involves sightings of a mystery man around every corner.  Is she losing her mind or does he really exist?   Her search for this grey-eyed stranger leads her to  Scotland. There she meets a witch with a secret, a vindictive English knight who is bent on revenge, and she crosses a fog shrouded bridge into the arms of a 16th century Highlander.

Cailin MacBayne is no stranger to beautiful women, but has always managed to stay one step ahead of commitment.  That all comes to an end when he meets Ashley.  He doesn’t care where this beautiful, yet unusual lass came from, he’s just happy to have found her.  Ashley cannot resist the handsome Scot and finds herself falling hopelessly in love.  In the process, a secret is revealed, a battle is waged and Ashley must ultimately decide whether to return to her own time or give up her 21st century life to stay with the love she has found in the past.

Ashley Moore sees a mysterious man around every corner. This makes her wonder if she’s losing her mind, or if the stranger is real. Her search for answers leads her Scotland, and to a mysterious, fog-covered bridge that somehow crosses the barriers of time and makes her end up in the sixteenth-century, where she meets Highlander Cailin MacBayne. The two soon fall for each other, but through secrets and war, Ashley must make the ultimate decision: choose love and stay in the sixteenth century, or go back home to life in the twenty-first century.

What an engaging read! From the first few pages, I was hooked. Ashley is a delightful character, and Cailin has all the things you’d look for in a Highlander: charm, good looks, strong, protective. The whole bridge through time idea worked great, and the setting (both contemporary and the historical one) was convincing. A great book, recommended to fans of historical fiction and/or time travel romance.

Personal Biography of Kathy Vassilakis

DSC00552Kathy Vassilakis used to work in the corporate world. She majored in accounting from Brooklyn College and followed her dream to work in corporate accounting for 15 years until she became a mom.

Being a mom was her dream all along and she left accounting to raise her beautiful daughter Sophia. She’s been writing stories for her daughter for quiet some time and decided to write her first children’s book of many to come I Woof You From The Bottom Of My Heart.

The idea to write this book came from my daughter and my dog. This book was written to show children how special a bond and friendship they can have with their dog. Dog’s are wonderful pets and love us unconditionally. They will protect and love us no matter what. Children deserve to learn that at a very young age and grow to love all animals. Compassion for animals is intimately connected with goodness of character.

Growing Up

I grew up in Brooklyn NY. I was the second child out of two. I have one sister named Joanne and always had animals. We had many dogs throughout my childhood from Pomeranians to Chows. I also had ducks, roosters, chickens, bunnies and many more animals. I was and still am a huge animal lover.

My love of books started when my mother used to read wonderful stories to my sister and me every night. She always tried to teach us both languages Greek and English. My parents were born and raised in Greece so Greek was their first language. Most of the stories she read to us were in Greek but that started my love for reading and writing. I learned both languages and am now fluent in writing and reading Greek which I am very proud of.

I’ve been married now for five years and have one beautiful daughter. My daughter Sophia is 17 months old and she is my whole world. I also have a Japanese Chin named Bella. My husband, Greg, has always supported and believed in me, and my family will always be my inspiration.

Creating I Woof You From The Bottom Of My Heart

I have spent twenty years writing stories and brainstorming ideas for children’s books with my family. I came up with the characters Sophia and Bella after my own family. I was inspired by my daughter and the relationship she has with Bella and created I Woof You From The Bottom Of My Heart to teach children ho special a bond they can have with their dogs.

Compassion for animals is greatly connected to goodness of character this is the motto of the book. All animals deserve to be loved, respected, and treated right.

After a lot of hard work and many sleepless nights, I was finally able to publish my first book: I Woof You From The Bottom Of My Heart. To me, finally seeing my book in print and being able to share it with the public has made all the late nights and long hours worthwhile.

Book Excerpt for Cross Roads Tour

Today I’m hosting an excerpt from YA urban fantasy / action adventure “Cross Roads” on my blog. I hope you enjoy it!

Book Excerpt

The next morning, Decker sat in his black sedan hidden by its tinted windows. The information he had received from the tablet led him to the Garden Way Hotel. The hotel was new in the city on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Decker held a camera in his hands like a photojournalist on assignment. He had taken pictures of everyone who had entered the hotel but only construction workers had entered.

Decker had been in place across from the hotel since dawn. Earlier that morning he had managed to place security cameras near the other entrances that fed directly into his computer. His laptop sat next to him in the passenger seat. Decker had views of the docking and loading area as well as the other entrances of the hotel. It was past eleven o’clock when Decker finally saw activity that interested him. A silver sedan pulled up in from of the hotel. The driver hurried out and opened the rear passenger door. The man who emerged from the backseat was tall, thin and had blonde hair that had been neatly combed back. He wore an expensive suit and a gray long coat. He looked to be in his late thirties and wore dark shades. Decker immediately recognized him and lowered the camera away from his face. His mouth gaped slightly.

“Linus.” he said aloud to himself as if to confirm what his eyes had just witnessed. He quickly raised the camera and rapidly took pictures. The driver led Linus inside. Decker made sure to get a picture of the car and

the plates as well. Decker was certain that whatever was going to happen would take place in this hotel and soon. He quickly turned his attention to his laptop and saw guards taking position at the entrances and securing the perimeter of the hotel.

Decker reached into his pocket and retrieved his cellphone. He hit a speed dial number and the phone picked up on the second ring. No one spoke on the other end. They didn’t have to.

“Confirmed. It’s Linus alright. The Garden Way Hotel.”

“Roger that. Over and out.” replied the deep male voice on the opposite end.

Decker disconnected the call. Now, like a predator hunting its prey, Decker would play the waiting game with his target until it was time to strike.

Author Interview Cursed Heroes: The Beginnings Tour

I’m interviewing William D. Ollivierre, author of science-fiction / fantasy “Cursed Heroes: The Beginnings”. Welcome!

Q: Please tell us about yourself.

Most people call me Will mostly because I rarely answer to William. I do write a lot when I’m in a good mood but I never stop thinking about my stories. For as long as I can remember the one thing that has made me stand in my mind is my almost lack of interest in reality at times. This is because I’m always wrapped up in my own world, living out and adventure in my head or maybe just creating a new kind of world.

Other than that, I spend my time working on my websites or my car just doing little things to pass the time when I’m not working or writing.

Q: Tell us about your books.

My books are for fun and to teach a little lesson sometimes but for most part there for fun. I write each of my books not for the sake of writing but to enjoy the story and to share it with everyone. Just to let that person escape their world, their problems, and jump into mind and have a little fun for a while.

Q: What inspired you to write  Cursed Heroes: The Beginnings?

My inspiration for All of the Cursed Heroes is the same and that was that people can be saved by the people that are willing to do what it takes and never give up.

Q: How much time per week do you spend writing/editing your work?

Hardest question I’ve been asked in a long time. I don’t have a time I put aside to write or edit my work, some days I write and edit my work and then there are weeks when I do nothing. For me writing and editing are just the last things I do to get a story finished. All the little details and workings of everything I write and run through my head over and over again for days, weeks, even years before I will even write down the first word of the story. In fact many of my short stories have been written from memory of ones I had in mind years before. But if the question is how much time I spend creating new stories I would say it would be easier for me just to tell you I sleep about five hours a day so I spend around 45 hours a week not working on a story.

Q: If you could meet three authors, which authors would you choose?

I only have two that I would like to meet Douglas Adams, and William Shakespeare.

Q: What are you working on at the moment?

The legend of the Zen is my current focus, I am hoping to have it finished by the end of November. This is the second book in cursed heroes series and it tells the life story of one of the leaders of the Brothers Will 24. Hopefully I can have it finished and ready to publish before December ends.

About The Book

beggins-cover-kendleTitle: Cursed Heroes: Beginnings

Cursed by faith or maybe something much more powerful. Theses heroes fight risking everything in order to protect the universe they live in. Asking for nothing in return not even recognition, or so it may seem. These cursed souls are cursed to wander the universe forever protecting it against their own will.

Come see where they came from in this epic telling of just a few of their stories.
