I’m hosting an interview today with Craig MacLachlan, author of YA fantasy “Summer’s Shadow”. Welcome to my blog, Craig!

Author Interview

1) Please tell us about yourself.

I live in Post Falls, Idaho. I have been married to my wife Christina for 18 years. We met in freshman year of high school and began dating at 15, so we’ve been together for 24 years. My great grandpa, Frank Liebig, was one of the first forest rangers in Glacier National park before it became a park. He lived there with his wife. My grandma and great aunts were born at Glacier. There is a book about him called The First Ranger. Let’s see, besides writing and reading, I love the outdoors. Hiking, exploring, picking wild berries and mushrooms, walking along creeks and lakes, camping and just enjoying everything nature has to offer.

2) Tell us about your book.

When seventeen-year-old Sierra Winters watches her physical body sink to its death, she realizes a shining silver cord connects her two halves together, but it breaks off from her bellybutton, sinks with her body, and then everything changes when a mysterious boy named Valeck saves her life.

Sierra soon discovers she has stumbled upon a mysterious realm known as The Void, which is filled with mystery, intrigue, danger and love. But upon returning to The Void, she is met by a sinister man known as Maven Kodiak who can manipulate his surroundings into a sickening Rot. Maven wants the power of her silver cord all for himself so he can enter the physical world and conquer it.

And he will do anything to take Sierra’s cord, even if it means her death.

On the run from Maven, Sierra struggles to understand her abilities and powers which yield some surprising results. As she and Valeck fall in love, Sierra discovers he is keeping a vital secret from her. Can Sierra be happy sharing her life between both realms, or will she be forced to choose one over the other forever?

But nothing in Sierra’s life will matter if she doesn’t find a way to stop the maniac hunting for her.

3) What inspired you to write Summer’s Shadow?

My inspiration for Summer’s Shadow came from several sources. One was a short adult fantasy I wrote many years ago that used the Void as a prison and reading about astral projection. I combined the ideas and felt the best place to set the story was in the present and in a place I used to live. Everything just clicked.

4) How much time per week do you spend writing / editing your work?

Typically I spend thirty plus hours a week writing and editing.

5) If you could meet three authors, which authors would you choose?

I’ve already met Marissa Meyer, so that has been accomplished! I would also like to meet J.K. Rowling and Neil Shusterman!

6) What are you working on at the moment?

Right now I’m working on book two, Fall’s Fury. I’m also revising a Young Adult Contemporary thriller that I will be querying soon.
