Author Interview with J.E. and M. Keep

I’m happy to interview J.E. and M. Keep today, the authors behind “When Dreamers Wake”, a scifi, post-apocalyptic novel. Thank you for answering my questions!

Author Interview

Please tell us about yourself.

Well, we’re a two person writing team! We’ve been together for over 12 years, and writing even longer than that — since we were little kids! We love scifi and fantasy, and we used to write a lot of World of Warcraft fanfiction together. Initially we wrote separately, but eventually we began to realize that our stories are more dynamic and interesting, as well as easier to write, when we work together.

Since we discovered that, writing has been our driving passion. Joshua has left behind his career as a historian to write full time, and it’s my hope to join him shortly.

Tell us about your book.

When Dreamers Wakes is a post-apocalyptic scifi that takes place in a world of horror, but the book itself is not frightening so much as it is fun. Leon is a strong and interesting character and we really focus on the bright spots in his life.

We could have taken it an entirely different way, putting the emphasis on the horrors and the post-apocalyptic nature of the world, but we’re more interested in character driven stories so instead it focuses on that. His relationships with his lovers, his companions. He has so much love to give.

What inspired you to write When Dreamers Wake?

Joshua usually handles all of our plotting, but he was feeling burnt out, so Michelle decided to work something out for him. It is very much centered on his tastes, kinks and fantasies, and the world itself was inspired by Lovecraft’s C’thulhu mythos as well as other post-apocalyptic media like Fallout New Vegas, The Road, Walking Dead, etc.

Margaret Atwood’s Oryx and Crake was also an inspiration for looking into a post-apocalyptic setting and the human dynamics involved there. We just tend to enjoy the notion of a sort of post-civilization struggle for survival.

How many hours per week do you spend writing?

On a good weekday we’ll get 4 or so hours, though it’s usually closer to 2-3. On weekends, though, we’ve gotten as many as 15 hours straight. It was a lot of fun but very exhausting.

If you could meet three authors, which authors would you chose?

Michelle: I would love to meet Margaret Atwood, Barb Hendee, and Elaine Cunningham. Maybe Lisa Smedman if she could. All of them write scifi or fantasy fiction, and since they’re all women they likely have an interesting perspective on it.

Joshua: Bucking the living, I’ll say Frank Herbert of Dune fame. I’ve loved his work but some things always bothered me about the themes on a personal level, so I’d love to interrogate the man about that. Carl Sagan was a great inspiration to me on numerous personal and professional levels, and I’d love to pick his brain. Then I’d have to say in last spot it’s a tossup between John Steinbeck or George Orwell. Two men at an interesting period in history that saw, experienced and wrote about quite a lot that interests me.

What are you working on at the moment?

So many things! We’re releasing Torn and Seduced, an Urban Fantasy novel tomorrow, and will be doing a book tour for that as well. Make sure to sign up for our Newsletter for notification since we’ll be doing a giveaway for that as well 🙂 After that we have two more fantasy novels coming out this winter, and they’re currently with editors.

As for what we’re writing, we tend to have a lot of things in progress. We have a horror erotica in the works with not-so-sparkly vampires, and a couple of fantasy novels. The next big project we might work on is doing the sequels to The Warlord’s Concubine and Outcast, as we get a lot of requests for more. The plot outline for both has been long completed, it’s just a matter of sitting down and doing the work!

Genre: Post-Apocalyptic SciFi

The Old Gods have risen and moved on, leaving Earth in ruins.

Leon liked that just fine.

He got along better after the collapse of society, and has his own vision for how things should be run: with him in charge of his own fate, with many lovers beneath him.

Yet when he has a run-in with a beautiful and mysterious woman, his life will never be the same.

Author Bio

J.E. & M. Keep love to combine fantasy, scifi, horror, romance and mystery into exciting and titillating novels.

They are long term, loving partners in a very happy relationship and because of this, they love to torture their characters. Dark romance touches all of their stories in one way or another, from elicit trysts to forbidden love.

Some of their work contains dubious consent and erotic pain, so it’s not for the faint of heart. Their stories are often called twisted and arousing — at the same time.

All work is 18+, trigger warnings available on the second page of every book. If you want to hear about new releases, sign up for the newsletter!
