I’m hosting an interview today with author Kat Mellon, the author of literary fiction novella “Creation”. Thanks for answering my questions, Kat!
1) Please tell us about yourself.
I’m Kat and I currently live in Fort Collins. I’m an avid participant in NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) and dig writing literary fiction and YA. I also ghostwrite children’s books, design blogs, and write creative product descriptions on a freelance basis.
2) Tell us about your book in five sentences or less.
Creation explores the consequences of a society in which creative individuals are forced to create strictly for the benefit of others.
3) What inspired you to write Creation?
Both Ayn Rand’s Anthem and Kazuo Ichiguro’s Never Let Me Go had a huge influence on Creation. “The Gallery” of Never Let Me Go stuck with me long after I read the book, as did Rand’s discussion of Ego and the concept of self. Although I wasn’t conscious of it at the time, Creation also follows Plato’s The Allegory of the Cave, which entreats mankind to seek enlightenment and truth no matter how frightening the journey may be.
(Also: a dream involving Robert Pattinson!)
4) How many hours per week do you spend writing?
Not enough! There are months where I hammer out 100K words (roughly 400 “book” pages!) of material and months where I write nothing at all.
5) If you could meet three authors, which authors would you choose?
Andrew Davidson (The Gargoyle), Oscar Wilde (The Picture of Dorian Gray), and Chaucer (The Canterbury Tales).
6) What are you working on at the moment?
I’m currently working on a literary fiction novel titled Flowers When You’re Dead. It involves a socially isolated nineteen-year-old guy, art therapy, and a vintage shop. You can learn more about it at fwydbook.blogspot.com.
Author: Kat Mellon
Genre: Literary Fiction
Who owns what you create?
Creation is a provocative exploration of what it means to be free. Set in a dystopian future where creativity is exclusively harnessed for the greater good, two artistically talented individuals remind us all never to take for granted the product of our own work and imagination.
Creation is inspired by Ayn Rand’s Anthem and Kazuo Ishiguro’s Never Let Me Go.
Kat is a young author living in Fort Collins, CO. She graduated cum laude from the University of New Mexico with a BA in English at age nineteen and is a master of procrastination and pizza eating. She will soon query agents with her biggest and baddest novel, Flowers When You’re Dead.
