Author Interview with Jeanette Pekala

I’m happy to host an interview today with author Jeanette Pekala, the talented author of “Culture Shock”, a paranormal novel for young adults.

The Interview

1) Please tell us about yourself.

I’m Jeanette Pekala, author of the Culture Shock Series. I also have a day job at a local nonprofit, a mom of two, and a soldier’s wife. I love writing, traveling, reading, and spending time with my incredible family. I grew up in busy South Florida but after high school, I needed out. I wanted a slower, more relaxed way of life. I went to Tampa for college then moved to Gainesville, FL where I finished my degree and decided to start my family and career in the Gainesville area which happens to be not too far from where Culture Shock takes place.

2) Tell us about your book in five sentences or less.

Culture Shock is witty a tale of romance and mystery with a large helping of southern hospitality and a dash of supernatural. It follows the personal journey to confidence for our main character, Macy Holmes. She moves from crazy Manhattan to the quaint town of Bougainvillea where she meets some interesting people (to say the least). Her dreams turn to nightmares so real she keeps waking in fear, physically shaking because she has the sneaking suspicion that these dreams are reality…

3) What inspired you to write Culture Shock?

A really horrific nightmare. It was November of 2011. I woke one night at three in the morning from the most realistic, creepiest nightmare ever (much the same way the main character does). Once I calmed down enough and told myself it wasn’t real, a light bulb went on in my head. Bing! What a great concept for a book. I grabbed a dried out green marker and a scrap piece of paper and jotted down the entire nightmare. That is how Culture Shock was born.

4) How many hours per week do you spend writing?

I’m super busy. Between working full-time, homework, kid’s sports, and keeping a household up and running I don’t have much time, but I rarely watch television, so when I’m not reading, I’m writing. Usually about 20 hours a week on average I would say.

5) If you could meet three authors, which authors would you choose?

Richelle Mead

Tara Sivec

Stephenie Meyer

6) Tell us about your current work in progress.

Shock Wave. It’s the second book in the Culture Shock Series. It’s a continuation of Macy’s (the main character) story. The stakes are higher in this one so be sure to read Culture Shock before this one is out in the fall.

Thanks for the interview!
